The magical Blue Grotto

Ischia and Procida

Ischia fi [map] is the largest and most diverse of the islands in the Bay of Naples, though a bus ride around its serpentine roads takes less than two hours passing through or near its six principal towns. It has a life of its own beyond tourism (though it swells to six times its population in summer months), mainly based on the production of a delightful light white wine (so famous in antiquity that Ischia was known to the Romans as Aenaria – wine-land), as well as a thriving fishing industry and the cultivation of chestnuts and lemons.

The volcanic island is a mass of green vines, orchards and pines, rising to the central peak of Monte Epomeo. Ischia’s volcano is extinct, but it continues to steam away like a leaky boiler and underground activity is ubiquitous. As you travel around the island, you’ll see puffs of white issuing from pipes in the back gardens of homes and cracks in the hillsides.

As well as yielding excellent wine, the volcanic terrain produces bubbling hot springs prized for their therapeutic powers since Roman times. Ischia has seventy hot springs and 100 thermal bath establishments. Visitors who come here on a regular basis swear by them for the effective treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, circulatory disorders, sciatica, even obesity and premature ageing. But you don’t have to be suffering from an ailment to benefit. There is nothing more therapeutic for the weary traveller than a day spent wallowing in hot springs and thermal pools, maybe indulging in a mud bath, massage or facial treatment.
